Living Cultures

Despite their challenging history, American Indian cultures continue to survive. The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian displays both historic and contemporary materials made by American Indians and hosts Native American artists, storytellers and speakers to convey their history and culture in their own voices.

New Book Seminar

The Mitchell Museum is excited to announce the transformation of the book discussion group into a more formal book seminar led by Dr. Paul Friesema. A Northwestern University professor emeritus, Dr. Friesema has extensive professional experience with Native American legal and political rights. Dr. Friesema holds a PhD in political science from the University of Iowa and a JD from the Detroit College of Law. His teaching career includes such notable institutions as Northwestern University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Michigan. An avid writer, Dr. Friesema has co-authored four books, 17 monographs and reports, and he has written over 30 scholarly articles. His legal career highlights include assessing politics and policies of environmental assessments, and he has worked extensively to gain political empowerment for American Indian peoples for control over natural resources. Dr. Friesema is excited to share his experiences with seminar participants during the monthly lunchtime meetings.
