Deconstructing Stereotypes: Top Ten Truths
June 18, 2011 - March 2012
Many of us face stereotypes and misconceptions about our heritage and culture. But what stereotypes impact the lives of Native peoples the most? The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian surveyed Native American and Indigenous Canadian peoples to find out. The results identified the top ten stereotypes and misconceptions that Native peoples face today from mascots and casinos to addiction and treaty rights. Explore the exhibit to read quotes from Native peoples, see artifacts and art addressing those stereotypes, and learn some Native perspectives about the truths that divide and unite us.
- Native peoples are still here; they exist and thrive.
- Indians have made great contributions to society throughout 20th and 21st centuries.
- Native American tribes or First Nation governments or bands are very diverse.
- Indian theme mascots are disrespectful and harmful.
- Casinos do not make all Indians rich.
- Treaty land agreements were unfair and unfulfilled.
- Off-reservation, reserved rights in treaties were also unfulfilled.
- Native peoples continue to fight for their rights.
- Native cultures were highly advanced before contact.
- There is a large urban Indian population.
