Treasures of the Collection
Opens September 17, 2011

Since the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian was founded by John and Elizabeth Seabury Mitchell in 1977, the collection has grown from their original 3,000 artifacts to a robust 10,000 pieces. John Mitchell’s lifelong passion for collecting Native art and educating children about American Indian culture inspired him to share his collection with the public.
No longer just a family collection, many other Native art collectors as well as Native artists donated artifacts to the museum to carry on the mission to promote and share a deeper understanding and respect of American Indian peoples. The collection ranges from tribes throughout the United States and Canada from Paleo-Indian times to the present but concentrates on 19th through 21st century materials.
The over 75 objects in Treasures of the Collection highlight the Mitchell Museum’s outstanding collection of baskets, Southwestern art, beadwork, Inuit art, and ledger drawings. Learn about the cultures of the people who made and used the artifacts and meet some of the museum’s generous donors along the way.

Exhibits are funded in part through a generous grant from the
